All yo-yos have passed the manufacturer's quality inspection. Quality standards vary by manufacturer. Basically, products that can be used normally are within product specifications.

Examples of possible initial defects

  • if the following symptoms occur immediately after opening, they may be initial defects:
  • (Bind models only) The bearing barely rotates even when flicked with a finger.
  • Even after dampening vibrations with a finger during play, the yo-yo vibrates so much that its shape appears distorted.
  • Parts that should be installed (bearings, pads) are not installed.
  • Examples that do not constitute initial defects
  • Package damage
  • Color differences from expectations
  • Bearing noise or bind model return issues that occur after even a few plays
  • Yo-yos that arrived properly assembled but cannot be reassembled after disassembly
  • Scratches on the inside of the bearing area, paint chips
  • Color variations on the yo-yo that are not noticeable from a distance
  • Paint chips that are not noticeable from a distance
  • Scratches on the yo-yo that are not noticeable from a distance and barely detectable by touch
  • Minor rust on bearing surfaces of models that come pre-strung in the package (minor external rust has almost no impact on performance)

What is a bind?

Modern string trick yo-yos don't return when you tug the string. They're built that way on purpose, so they keep spinning — which means bringing the yo-yo back is a separate move called a "bind": you hook the string and wind it back up by hand. Learning this is the first hurdle with a modern yo-yo.

If your yo-yo years go back to the 90s, a bind will be new to you. But there's really only one thing to relearn: how you bring the yo-yo back. Your throw stays the same, and so do any tricks that land the yo-yo on the string.

What about tricks from the 90s?

Because the Essence doesn't return on its own, tricks that rely on a strong return — like Loop the Loop or Shoot the Moon — aren't possible with this set.

If you want to do both, you'll need a dedicated looping yo-yo as well. Take a look at the Essence Metal / Looping Set, which pairs this same Essence with two Loop 720s.

Your progression

STEP 1
Spin it out, then bind it back

Start with a straight throw and get the yo-yo spinning cleanly. Once you can hold a good spin, practice hooking the string and winding it back up with a bind. This is the entry point to modern yo-yoing.

STEP 2
Move on to string tricks

Once binding feels reliable, move on to string tricks like Trapeze and Brain Twister. This is where the longer spin time of full metal makes the biggest difference.

STEP 3
On to more advanced tricks

The Essence can also handle combo tricks that chain multiple moves together. It won't leave you wanting a new yo-yo once you've improved, so it works well as a first yo-yo you can keep using.
