The customizable MRL yo-yo series gets a fresh flavor from Daiki Tanaka's signature model, the Surveillance.

Following in the footsteps of the MRL-01 and 02 shells, the 03 is based on the shape of mowl's flagship model, the Surveillance. As a secret project name, the development team called this the "Surveillance Mini," giving the new MRL a decidedly different flavor compared to the previous versions.

The 03 shell has an H-profile to it, the most distinct element inherited from the Surveillance. While the initial MRLs were focused more on the concept of interchangeability, the 03 brings in the Surveillance's concept of "easy to throw," making it the most playable MRL to date. The power and balance are thanks to the design chops of Yo-Yo Studio Llama, who has brought to bear their know-how for countless releases. The small size really makes it like a "small Surveillance," perfect for throwing in a bag or carrying around easily, but still be able to play with the power of a high level contest yo-yo.

According to the father of the Surveillance, mowl ambassador and REWIND Shibuya staff member Daiki Tanaka, "This yo-yo was made to be small and easy to carry around, but to have more power and spin than the other MRL series models, to have a 'catchy' feeling."

The MRL series puts its weight behind the concept of a customizable yo-yo. One option is to switch out the shell for a machined polycarbonate one, or even a 3D printed one made of plastic filament: the aluminum hub can be fitted with shells of any shape or size. As a result of the shell design, there's a large flat area that really lets the artwork shine, just one of MRL's many features.

On this model, that huge side face features a fresh artwork, using a snake motif made of boas. The boa is said to hold the weight of the world up with its head, and so just as the Surveillance supports the design of the MRL-03 and mowl's future, through the backside of the shell you can see the Surveillance's design motif on the hub, peeking through the translucent plastic body.Once again, mowl has beautifully combined their concepts with Llama's designs, creating yet another masterpiece.
