YoYoFactory - Boost Afterburner
It's two-layered construction, but not bimetal?? Alex Hattori's newest signature model blasts off!
Absolutely dominant in the US National 3A Yo-Yo Contest, since 2013, Alex Hattori is a tinkerer at heart, and always guarantees something unique. Taking its pedigree from the Boost namesake, the Boost Afterburner looks like a bimetal design at first, but these two parts are made of the same 6061 aluminum alloy, but is still machined and assembled like a bimetal throw. A unique construction for a full metal yo-yo!
And why? Because it's not just the materials, but the design of a 2-layer construction that gives certain qualities to the yo-yo's weight distribution. Alex explored how the outer rim weight design changed between a single-layer and dual-layer construction. The dual-layer would perform more like it were bimetal, even though the materials had the same density. Especially in the wind, there's just something powerful about the way the yo-yo eats the string, and the sensation of the yo-yo when it hits that dead sleep.
Alex recommends you fine-tune your play experience with different string thicknesses, and finds it a good match for extra thick strings. The unique playfeel is worth it alone, but the Boost Afterburner is a downright excellent and highly-developed conceptual yo-yo.
